Aloha mai kākou! I am an illustrator and author of children’s books, living on the Big Island of Hawai’i. I moved to Hawai’i from Japan in 1987, and since 1989 I am grateful to have had opportunities to illustrate and/or written more than thirty five children’s books and many childrenʻs activity books, with Hawaiian themes.
Hawaii’s rich and diverse culture, history and nature have become my primary subjects and inspiration for creating my children’s books. Over the years, my aloha ʻāina, love of the land, has grown deeply in me, and has been reflected in creating my children’s books for island keiki; whether it’s in vivid stories with traditions of Hawai’i or illustrations featuring many native plants and animals. For my art, I use watercolor, collage, and digital mixed media to create illustrations. Working with textual mixed media (traditionally or digitally) adds visual interest to my illustrations. I love to create illustration with an array of colors I see everyday in Hawai’i, and these vibrant and multicolored illustration has become my signature style.
Besides illustrating and writing children’s books, I am also an art educator. I have taught at k-6 schools, high school, and been presenting an annual workshop “Children’s Book Illustration” at the University of the Nations (YWAM), Hawai’i. I graduated with a MA in Illustration from Savannah College of Arts and Design (SCAD), and a BA in Art from the University of Washington. I am a member of the Society of Childrenʻs Book Writer and Illustrators (SCBWI). With my childrenʻs books I hope to celebrate our beautiful Hawaiʻi with young audience.
